Which Countries Can A UK Visa Holder Travel To?

Another common question related to UK visas is “which countries can I travel to on a UK visa?” This is an interesting question as in theory you would only be able to travel within the United Kingdom’s 4 home nations. England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

There are other countries such as Georgia and Andorra that allow for visa-free travel, but the main issue in getting to these countries would be needing to travel through countries that didn’t allow it.

So How Do I Travel?

There are other options, if you have a passport for a different nationality then you should be able to travel on that, but you would need to ensure in advance that this travel would be in accordance with your visa rights. This is worth verifying with the Home Office to ensure that you remain compliant. Any lack of compliance could be treated badly and end up in your visa being revoked.

A Home Office advisor should be able to guide you as to your rights under your specific visa and let you know what you can and cannot do. If you are still not clear then get in touch and we can look into it for you.

Why is it so Hard to Travel on a Visa?

Many countries simply do not have agreements in place to cater for people travelling on visas. It is not the same as being a passport holder of the country and you won’t necessarily have the right to travel. The system does seem unfair and could certainly use some work in the future, but for now, it is the system that is in place and we have to work with that.

Is This Situation Likely to Change?

With the Conservative government in place, it seems highly unlikely that there will be an increase in concessions for visa holders. The government has repeatedly warned of its wish to reduce immigration to the “tens of thousands” and as such, it seems unlikely that they will extend any more concessions to visa holders.

Once the UK leaves the European Union in 2019 there will be scope for significant changes in the UK’s visa system, whether this will be beneficial is unclear. If the Conservative government remains in place, it seems unlikely that visa holders will get a better deal going forward, but the necessity of bringing immigrants to the UK may well change that.
